This report details the proceedings and outcomes of the Foundation Chambers Essay Writing Competition held for university students in Nigeria. The competition received 80 entries, and after a rigorous evaluation, 3 winners have emerged.

Introduction:

The Foundation Chambers Essay Writing Competition was announced on 17th August 2023 till 6th October 2023. It was aimed at cultivating academic excellence and stimulating thoughtful discourse among university students in Nigeria. The competition welcomed entries from over 20 Universities across the country and disciplines with an interest in the legal field.

Participation and Initial Evaluation:

The response to the competition was robust, with a total of 80 essay entries received. Following the submission period, a meticulous review process was undertaken. Seven essays were disqualified for surpassing the submission deadline, three for being in PDF format, and one for exceeding the prescribed word count. This resulted in 69 eligible essays for the next stage.

Plagiarism Check:

To ensure the integrity of the competition, a plagiarism test was conducted on the 69 essays. Unfortunately, 18 essays did not pass the test and were consequently removed from consideration. This left a pool of 54 essays for the subsequent evaluation phases.

Preliminary Marking:

Two Counsels were engaged as preliminary markers to screen the 54 essays for adherence to stipulated guidelines and content relevance. After this screening, they shortlisted the top 20 essays.

Senior Counsel Review:

A Senior Counsel further scrutinized the shortlisted 20 essays, narrowing down the selection to the top 10 essays based on exceptional quality and compliance with competition guidelines.

External Marker Assessment:

The final 10 essays were sent to an
external marker, an independent expert in the field. This external marker
evaluated the essays and produced the final rankings, identifying the top three
