Major Milestones
  • Negotiations and documentation of three (3) Ship Finance Facilities for the erstwhile National Maritime Authority (NMA) and three (3) beneficiaries under the Ship Building and Ship Finance (SBSF) Fund between 1996-1998;
  • Undertook negotiations, sale and purchase of eleven vessels as Overseas Liquidation Solicitors to the NNSL Liquidator between 1995-2001;
  • Undertook Bank loan syndication to fund purchase of a cruise vessel for a Client to undertake West-African Coast Cruise/Tour operations in 1998;
  • In 2001, the firm undertook the legal survey and documentation which led to the establishment of the Cargo Defence Fund by the Nigerian Shippers’ Council.
  • In 2001, the firm organized a Workshop on “Challenges of Maritime Practice in the New Millennium” in collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Transport and Maritime Parastatals – the erstwhile National Maritime Authority, Nigerian Ports Authority, Nigerian Shippers’ Council, Maritime Academy of Nigeria, Nigerdock Nigeria Plc and Nigerian Institute of Transport Technology, Zaria.
  • Between 2001 and 2003 the firm was actively involved in the conceptualisation and promotion of the Cabotage Act in Nigeria.
  • In 2003 and 2004, the firm organised Executive and Orientation Courses on Shipping and Maritime Law for the Nigerian Shippers’ Council Management and Senior Staff with UK Resource Persons.
  • The firm acted for a major Client and its foreign joint venture partners in the successful bid, negotiation and acquisition of the 51% Core Investorship in Nigerdock Plc – West Africa Largest ship Building and ship repair company in 2003/2004.
  • In 2004, the firm undertook on behalf of the Federal Ministry of Transport preparation of the draft Legislation for the implementation of the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) International Ship & Port Facility Security (ISPS) Code by the Nigerian Government.
  • Also in 2004 the firm undertook the preparation of the draft Regulations for the implementation of theInternational Ship & Port Facility Security (ISPS) Code by the Nigerian Government.
  • The firm undertook Loan Facility/Import of vessel/ship registration and related documentation for a Bank and one of its Clients in 2004/2005;
  • In 2005, the firm in collaboration with Interlink International Trading (UK) Ltd organised a Seminar on “International Transport and World Trade” for the Federal Ministry of Transport.
  • The firm also acted for two Consortia who bidded for the Concessioning of Nigerian Ports by the Bureau of Public Enterprise (BPE), one of which won the bid for a Tin Can Island Port Terminal in 2005/2006.
  • Between 2006 and 2008, the firm conducted a vessel inspection and verification exercise for the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) with a view to updating the Nigerian Ship Register.
  • 2006-2008 – Undertook successful private placement for a major local independent Oil and Gas Marketing Company; restructured and re-registered the company from a private limited company to a public liability company and acted as Solicitor to its IPO.
  • 2008 – Represented an off-taker in the negotiation of MOU and SPA with NLNG on domestic supply of LPG.
  • 2008 – Acted as Solicitor to the Offer in the listing of the Nigerian subsidiary of multinational Oil & Gas group based in Houston, USA.
  • 2010 – Represented one of the foremost Nigerian Oil Servicing Companies in a breach of drilling contract suit worth $50m involving an IOC operator which was later settled out of Court in favour of our Client.
  • Between 2010 and 2011 the firm undertook the preparation of the Draft Bill for the proposed Nigerian Bill of Lading Act on instruction of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency.
  • 1999-date – Has continued to act for a major Oil Servicing Company which has now secured an oil block and is currently exploiting same.
  • The firm acts for an indigenous company and a major provider of marine services, ship repair and river transportation organisation and the oldest operating river transport company in Nigeria with a fleet of 34 pusher tugs (varying from 500 to 1200 HP) and 73 barges, providing support/supply services to the Nigerian oil and gas industry.
  • The firm represents a leading builder and operator of small and medium size fiberglass vessels, providing craft for river, coastal and creek operations in Nigeria, boat fabrication, boat operation, shore support & storage and repairs & maintenance of vessels. It controls over 40% of the Nigerian small craft market and fabrication for oil and gas operators.
  • The firm is retained from time to time by the major maritime parastatals in Nigeria, namely the Nigerian Shippers’ Council, National Maritime Administration and Safety Agency and the Nigerian Ports Authority on contentious and non-contentious matters, and to advise on maritime policies and legislation.
