Enhanced Port Operations.
The adoption of technology in Nigeria’s maritime sector has greatly enhanced port operations, simplifying various processes while reducing bottlenecks. Gone are the days of lots of analogue paperwork and administrative procedures. Digital platforms, such as cargo tracking systems and advanced communication tools, can improve vessel movement coordination, allowing for monitoring of ships’ arrivals, departures, and cargo handling. Interestingly FG has approved electronic cargo systems that monitor vessel movement in Nigeria’s water space and curb incidents of oil theft.[1] These technologies enable efficient scheduling and minimize congestion, resulting in shorter waiting times for vessels at the ports.
Clearance Processes.
This has not fully been eased as there is still paperwork undergone at ports and terminals. The use of technology can revolutionise some customs clearance and streamline verification processes in Nigeria’s maritime sector. This development will not only simplify procedures for importers and exporters but will also minimise the potential for corruption and improved transparency in the sector.
Supply Chain Management
The integration of improved supply chain management in Nigeria’s maritime sector and the digital platforms and tracking systems, such as Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) and Global Positioning System (GPS), can facilitate the tracking of cargo from point of origin to destination.[2] Improved visibility facilitates enhanced coordination, forecasting, and precise tracking of goods, thereby reducing delays and losses. The Challenges Faced by Nigeria’s Maritime Industry
One of the main challenges faced by Nigeria’s maritime industry is inadequate infrastructure, equipment, dominance of foreign vessels and deficiency in export and lack of regulatory oversight.[3] Congestion and insufficient facilities lead to delays in cargo handling, increased costs, and inefficiencies in operations.
